FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about gunsmithing turnaround, FFL transfers, and how we work. If you don't see your question here, ask us directly — we'll write it back into the FAQ if other folks are probably wondering too.
How long does a gunsmithing job usually take? +
It depends on the work. Same-day turnaround on headspace checks and scope mounts. Three to five days on trigger jobs and cleanings. A full week on AR-15 assemblies. Two weeks on action bedding because of cure time. Restoration and custom work runs on a written estimate — typically three to eight weeks depending on scope. Every quote includes a realistic turnaround before you commit.
Can I ship my firearm to the shop for service? +
Yes. You can ship a long gun to us directly via UPS or FedEx if you're the owner shipping to an FFL for service. Handguns need to ship FedEx or UPS overnight by federal rules and generally require a dealer-to-dealer arrangement — call before you ship a handgun and we'll walk you through it. Include a note inside the package with your name, phone, and a description of the work you want done.
How does a $25 FFL transfer actually work? +
Flat fee per firearm. You buy from any online dealer or private seller, we email them a copy of our FFL, they ship the firearm to our Fort Scott shop, and we call you when it arrives. You come in with ID, fill out a Form 4473, we run the NICS background check, and you walk out with your firearm. Usually about 20 minutes at pickup. Full walkthrough is on our transfers page.
What do I need to bring for a Form 4473 and NICS check? +
A valid government-issued photo ID with your current address. For Kansas residents that's typically a Kansas driver's license or state ID. If your ID has a different address than where you currently live, bring a utility bill, lease, or other proof of your current Kansas address. You must be 21 to purchase or transfer a handgun and 18 for long guns. Answer every question on the 4473 honestly — lying on it is a federal felony.
Can you restore my grandfather's old rifle? +
Probably — but we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth the work before you commit. Send photos and a description through our quote form. Some rifles need a full bring-back. Some are better served by a cleaning, conditioning, and a written appraisal so you can hang them on the wall and hunt with something else. We wrote about a Winchester Model 12 where that was the right answer — see our restoration stories for a feel for how we approach the work.
How much is a detailed cleaning, and is it worth it? +
A detailed cleaning is $65 and includes a full tear-down, ultrasonic cleaning of every part, inspection for wear, spring replacement if we see an issue, relubrication, and a function test before hand-off. It's absolutely worth it before hunting season, after a neglect stretch of a year or more, or anytime a firearm has been fired heavily without a proper cleaning. If your rifle "short-cycled last time out" or "feels gritty," start here.
Can you source parts for me? +
Yes — particularly for AR-15 / AR-10 builds, common hunting rifle upgrades, optics, and standard replacement parts. We don't stock a big parts catalog but we have good wholesale access. Tell us your build spec and budget and we'll put together a list with pricing. For rare or obsolete parts on older rifles, we'll help you identify what you need and point you to the right supplier when we can't source it ourselves.
Do you sell firearms? +
Yes — we keep a small, hand-picked selection of new and used firearms and optics. Because we're a small shop, inventory turns over and varies; see the shop page for what's currently in stock, or call to ask about something specific. Every new firearm we sell includes a free 30-day tune-up at the bench. If we don't have what you want, we can usually special-order it or recommend an FFL transfer from another source.
Do you accept consignment firearms? +
Yes, on case-by-case basis. We're selective — the firearm has to be something we'd be comfortable selling and that we think will move at a fair price. Bring it in for an honest assessment. If it's a good fit, we'll agree on a price and commission before anything's listed, and you get paid when it sells. If we don't think we can move it for what you want, we'll tell you straight up so you don't waste months waiting.
What payment methods do you accept? +
Cash, debit card, and all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express). We also accept certified checks for larger purchases by prior arrangement. Online orders pay through our secure checkout. We do not currently accept personal checks at the counter. Kansas sales tax (6.5%) applies to in-store purchases.
Is there a permit required to buy a firearm in Kansas? +
Kansas does not require a separate state permit to purchase firearms. You'll still complete the federal Form 4473 and NICS background check for any firearm purchased from an FFL. Kansas is also a Constitutional Carry state for concealed carry (age 21+, not a prohibited person), but voluntary concealed-carry licensing is still available if you want reciprocity with other states. If you're new to firearms ownership, ask — we're happy to walk you through the basics.
What are your shop hours and where are you located? +
We're open Tuesday through Friday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, closed Sunday and Monday. Drop-offs and pickups outside those hours can be arranged — text or call the shop. We're based in Fort Scott, Kansas (Bourbon County). See the contact page for full directions and a map.
Still Have a Question?
Happy to answer anything that's not covered here — especially if you're getting into firearms ownership for the first time or shipping in a heirloom for the first time.
