Buying a Firearm Online? How the FFL Transfer Process Works in Fort Scott

Step-by-step walk-through of an FFL transfer — what to send the seller, what happens when the gun lands, and what you'll pay at pickup.

If you've bought a firearm online — GunBroker, a manufacturer direct, a friend across state lines — federal law says it has to ship to a licensed dealer in your state, not to your house. That dealer is the FFL. We've been running transfers out of Fort Scott for folks all over southeast Kansas and western Missouri, and the process is a lot simpler than most buyers expect. Here's how it actually works.

Step one: when you buy the gun, the seller will ask for an FFL copy. You give them our name — Locked and Loaded Armory, Fort Scott, Kansas — and our FFL number. The easiest path is to have us email it directly to the seller. Text or call the shop, give us the seller's name and email, and we'll send the license on your behalf. Most sellers get it, cross-reference it against the ATF's FFL eZ Check, and put your package on a truck within a day or two.

Step two: when the shipment lands, we log it into our bound book the same day. We'll text you it's here. At that point, you come in during shop hours with a valid Kansas driver's license (or other state ID if you're a Missouri neighbor coming across), and we'll run the 4473 background check through NICS. In Kansas, most checks clear inside of five minutes. If it's a 'delay,' we hold the firearm until the FBI clears it or three business days pass, whichever comes first. That's rare, but it happens.

Step three: you pay the transfer fee, sign the paperwork, and walk out with the gun. Our transfer fee is flat — no per-item nonsense, no handling charges tacked on after the fact. If you want to know what we charge right now, call the shop or check the transfers page. A few things worth knowing: we don't do transfers on NFA items (suppressors, short-barreled rifles) at this time, we can't transfer a handgun to anyone under 21, and if the shipment looks damaged when it arrives we'll photo-document it and call you before you come pick it up. Simple, transparent, no surprises. That's how it should be.
